Other foundations joined in as well.

The Cleveland Foundation has chose to support the Cleveland School District with two large grants through their $15 million in awards to local charities.

Atlantic Philanthropies stepped up and made $12 million in grants to four East Baltimore Schools that are part of a redevelopment project in these schools where they will become centers for providing health, social and employment services to students and their families.

The grants extend over a four year period. Out of the Midwest the Alphawood Foundation of Chicago made a $10 million grant to Franklin D. Roosevelt Four Freedoms Park on Roosevelt Island to help fund the construction of this new park.

In California the Ben and Catherine Ivy Foundation sent out grants totaling $9.8 million for research grants to improve clinical care for patients with brain tumors and to come up with new strategies to help patients suffering from this condition. Four separate researchers in the USA received those grants.

The personal gift announcements were down during the last week but overall the month of December was ahead of 2008 year over year. Last year major gift announcements totaled approximately $325 million while this year the final tally was in excess of $1.5 billion.

A new corporate foundation was also announced last week as OneWest Bank, FSB in California, set aside $10 million to establish the fund. As we head into 2010 it appears as though the shape of philanthropy has changed. Foundations and wealthy individuals are more willing to make the big gift.

But they also have higher expectations of accountability and want to stay involved. The shift in giving comes with an enhanced sense of wanting to share in the long term success of the grant recipient. A trend we can count on for years to come. Best wishes for a productive year in 2010.

Good health to you.

A modest group of major gift announcements preceded the Christmas break. What the group lacked in dollar volume was balanced out by the range of the recipient organizations.

It is interesting to note the number of grants that from the Community Foundations to local nonprofits.

Six gifts ranging between $1 million and $1.5 million suggest that individual donors is on par with previous weekly gift announcements.

The international scene took top honors with the $12 million announcement from the Israel Museum. A gift from Jack, Joseph, and Morton Mandel through the Mandel Supporting Foundations helped to cap off the $100 million campaign for the museum’s 20 acre campus.

As we head towards 2010 one of the trends worth following is the number of international campaigns at the $100 million mark and above. At last count I have identified 12 of them.

Cause and effect of this suggests that more American fundraisers may start looking overseas for new job opportunities.

The CASE V conference held annually in Chicago is one of the highlights of the year for me. It brings together development and communications staff from higher education across the mid-west. The volunteer staff did an outstanding job once again of coordinating a splendid array of educational sessions and get together opportunities.

It was the awards table that caught my eye. As I strolled slowly by, pausing to read a headline, view a unique page design or some other attribute of the award winning hard copy, it occurred to me just how much the communications department is so vital to the success of a campaign.

Once a campaign is launched it is the development staff that take center stage. Celebrations take place to announce the launch of the public phase of the campaign, acknowledge the leadership gifts already received and to gather some emotional momentum towards the development efforts yet to come.

Think about the recent campaigns you have heard about. Think about how many times you have heard the news that they had a number of first time donors who made a gift of $1 million.

When we stop and think about that for a moment it really is quite remarkable.

People who have never made a gift before stepping up and making a gift / pledge of $1 million. We saw this at the University of Arkansas, University of Michigan, Stanford, University of Miami and many others across the USA. The billion dollar campaigns, of which there are many, over 40 currently underway according to some sources, now count on these newbie big gift donors to help them reach their goals.

In fact that trend has spread internationally to Canada where the University of Toronto, University of Alberta and McGill have each reported $1 million first time donors.

But where do all these people come from? What makes them want to give so generously, especially the first time they have ever made a gift to the nonprofit organization? Development staff are the ones who take center stage and get the lions share of recognition for campaign success but is that the whole picture.

I don't think so.

It is something you may have heard me mention before, in-direct stewardship. Think of all those press releases and communication bulletins published by in the weeks, months and years leading up to a campaign. The messages are about accountability, responsible actions, showing the donor community that the nonprofit is doing what they said they were going to do with the money they received.

Getting the word out to community in advance of the campaign is the ongoing and often under-appreciated work of the communications staff. I suggest to you that their work represents in-direct stewardship, perhaps one of the most valuable assets of your nonprofit organization. They blaze the path and tell the story of the mission and vision in advance of the development staff. You could say they help pay-it forward to the donor community.

So as you celebrate the gifts received this past year and ready yourselves for 2010, take a moment a acknowledge your communications team.

Seasons Greetings
Next entry comes in January 2010

What an amazing week of philanthropic announcements!

Over $228.5 million in gifts, grants and pledges to more than 250 nonprofit organizations.

Along with Lorry Lokey’s $110 million gift to the Silicon Valley Community Foundation, we heard of the $50 million + gift to Loyola University of Chicago from John Cuneo, Jr., his wife, Herta, and the Cuneo Foundation.

In other major gift news the secret identity of a nonprofit benefactor was revealed in New York this week. David Gelbaum, a former hedge-fund manager who has made large donations anonymously, confirmed that over the past five years he has given a total of nearly $388-million.

Gelbaum’s gift went to three nonprofits, the ACLU that received $93.5 million, $246.8 million to the Iraq Afghanistan Deployment Impact Fund and $47.7 million to the Sierra Club Foundation.

However, the identity of the anonymous donor to women led universities and colleges remains a mystery. The gifts have become less frequent over the summer and fall of 2009. One reports puts the tally at over $74 million.

What isn’t a mystery is the timing of more than $250 million of grants and pledges made this last week across the USA.

As we move towards year end the money and the announcements of the act of giving are combining to create a positive theme, helping to define a path towards better things to come in 2010.
